Duke of Edinburgh Award Success

District Commissioner Debs Olsen for Kyle and Carrick District Scouts presented 2 Explorer Scouts Sean White and George McClure of the 48th Ayrshire Scout Group with their recent Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

George was presented with his Bronze Award after completing his Volunteering as a Young Leader helper for the Beaver section, doing football for his Physical with Troon Thistle and completing a First Aid course for his Skill section finishing his award with his Expedition in the Patna Hills discovering the Lost Mining Villages and their history.

Sean was presented with his Silver Award which he attained by carrying out doing his three disciplines of Skill in which he done Electronic Engineering, Physical in which he did Martial Arts achieving progression to his next Grade, Volunteering as a Young Leader helper for the Scout section and completing his award with his Expedition walking 57 miles over the three days from Glenbuck to Ayr.

Return Of The Coffee Morning ….

18th Ayrshire have been busy recently with the return of their Annual Coffee Morning after two years off due to covid. It was held at St. Columba Church Hall in Ayr and was supported by Church members, parents, friends and other members of the community.

This year the coffee offering was taken up another level with the kind sponsorship of Rocket Monkey Roastery based locally in Ayr. There’s not much Rocket Monkey doesn’t know about coffee and our supporters loved learning about the ethical blends.

We once again had the generous support of former Cub Leader Kay taking charge of the plant stall. Parents supported the event with home baking, donations of items to sell plus hands on support on the day.

The event raised a record £1950! These funds help to support the Group but principally subsidise the Annual Group Camp at Lapwing Lodge which was held a week later.

James Edwards, 18th Ayrshire Group Scout Leader, said “we are really grateful to everyone who supported and attended our Coffee Morning, resulting in an really fantastic amount raised! Furthermore, it has meant that we have bolstered the relationships the Group has with the parents and community.”

Hamish Receives his Chief Scout Gold Award

A Scout from the 18th Ayrshire Scout Troop completed his Chief Scout Gold Award, the highest award in the Scout section. Hamish managed to complete all nine Scout Challenge Badges, tackling the final challenges during his Group Camp at Lapwing Lodge last week. Each challenge badge brings its own requirements, asking those participating to connect with their wider world; exploring different faiths; pitch a tent and practice their camping skills; work as a team to achieve a common goal and above all, learn something new!

Hamish has spends the last 4 years in the scouts section working towards getting this badge and we as leaders try our hardest to get every scout earning this award.

Hamish will now move up to Explorers in the coming months, to make more memories to last a lifetime. Well done Hamish!

“Eggs”tra Special Cub Scout

Cub Scout Dayn from the 14th Ayrshire Scout group was on a mission to collect as many Easter Eggs and toiletries for children in hospital over Easter. Young people who will benefit from Dayn’s Easter kindness, are the patients at the Royal Hospital for Children Glasgow, Crosshouse Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and the Yorkhill Charity. After a heart felt appeal from Dayn, who has complex heart defects and attends the Royal Hospital for Children regularly for check ups and open heart operations, the Kyle and Carrick District Scout members jumped into action.

BEAVERS, Cubs and Scouts from the 18th Ayrshire Scout Group (St Columba), 28th Ayrshire Scouts (Troon) 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) and Morrison’s Ayr, shelled out for chocolate treats, to give Easter Bunny Cub Scout Dayn, from Prestwick, a hand to make this year’s Easter appeal a success.

Dayn said “A massive thank you to everyone that gave so generously to my’ Easter Appeal, I am overwhelmed with everyone’s generosity. I know these Easter treats will bring a smile to a persons face that’s in hospital or having treatment over Easter. Thank you so much!”

Dayn delivered over 302 Easter treats, toiletries and toys to the sick children and their parents over the Easter period, hopefully bringing a smile to their faces.

Hillbillies MCC Easter Egg Run Crosshouse Hospital

Dayn was lucky enough to join the Hillbillies MCC Easter Egg Run to Crosshouse University Hospital. These amazing guys raised over £3,000 for the hospital along with Dayns 150 Easter treats to the children in Crosshouse Hospital during the Easter.

Fiona Hainey Group Scout Leader for the 14th Ayrshire Scouts Group said ‘Dayn is a gift to those he’s around. His positive attitude and charitable nature is humbling. Dayn has tirelessly collected seasonal treats for the children in the hospitals of Ayrshire and Glasgow for years now and the Scout Groups from the Kyle and Carrick District are delighted to be part of his Easter and Christmas appeals every year. Dayn you are awesome!’

Scout’s Meet World…….

Kyle and Carrick Scout District can be found on the South West coast of Scotland, part of the South West of Scotland Scout Region. The District covers an area of approximately 422 square miles from Ballantrae in the south to Dundonald in the north. We have 12 Groups across the District and 4 active Explorer Scout Units providing Scouting to over 900 young people within Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers. We are proud to be part of the largest co-educational youth movement in the UK.

Kyle and Carrick Scout District is delighted to announce, that after 2 years of zoom calls and social distancing activities, 24 young people have been selected to take part in 3 international Scouting events. These young travelers will be jetting off to South Korea for World Scout Jamboree in 2023, Explorer Belt Expedition to Romania 2022 , Blair Atholl International Jamborette 2022, for some unforgettable adventures of a lifetime.

Scouts and Explorers from 6 groups in the District have undertaken various qualifying stages to be selected, following the motto – Unlock a new world – meant for them. Scouts / Explorers from 12^th Ayrshire Scout Group (Kingcase), 18^th Ayrshire Scout Group (St Columba), 28^th Ayrshire Scout Group / Tiger ESU (Troon), 31^st Scout Group (Loans), 48^th Ayrshire Scout Group (Dundonald) and 100^th Scout Group / Burns ESU (Alloway) will be taking part in these events.

The World Scout Jamboree is held in a different country every 4^th year and will be in South Korea for 2023. More than 40,000 Scouts from across the world will come together for the 25^th World Scout Jamboree. The World Scout Jamboree is a World Organisation of the Scout Movement. We are so proud that 10 young people from Kyle and Carrick Scout District will be part of the next UK Contingent.

7 young people from Kyle & Carrick Scout District, will be taking part in the Explorer Belt Expedition to Romania in July 2022. The Explorers will take part in a ten-day expedition, travelling independently through the Transylvanian region of Romanian, gaining a real understanding of a different country, its culture, people and their way of life.

Finally, 7 young people have been selected to be part of the Scottish International Patrol Jamborette in July 2022 in Blair Atholl. 500 Scottish Explorer Scouts will camp alongside Scouts from around the world, working as a dual patrol of 12. There is an exciting programme of activities and the opportunity for our young people to form lasting international friendships.

These Scouts will become more than just travel buddies, they will become planners, fundraisers, motivators and mentors & hopefully the future leaders in our ever-growing Scout District.

Dillon Scout from 18th Ayrshire Scout Group said ‘I most excited about meeting new people from other cultures at the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea. I think I need to learn some more Korean before I go. Not sure how I’m going to cope with the heat!’

Scout Sophie from the 18th Ayrshire Scout Group said ‘I’m really looking forward to World Scout Jamboree, in South Korea. I love learning about other countries cultures and different types of food. I feel very lucky to have been chosen for this once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m hoping to be a more confident traveler. I’m also hoping to try many new things from food to activities I would never normally get to do.’

Most of our young people have been involved in Scouting since joining Beavers at six years old. These eager Scouts are now busy thinking of ways & working to raise funds of between £1,000 to £4,000 to help cover the costs of travel and event fees. Part of the WSJ participants fees also help towards enabling a Scout from a developing nation to attend.

Beach Buddies Help At Annual Beach Clean, Prestwick

14th Ayrshire (Prestwick) Beavers, and Cubs Scouts came out on a beautiful Spring morning on Saturday 26th March to assist in the annual Rotary Club Beach Clean, Prestwick. With fabulous parents in tow, the young people’s strong work ethics and their efforts really paid off. The Beavers and Cubs were part of the local volunteering team to clean up Prestwick’s beach. They collected a great deal of rubbish.

They met at Prestwick Beach (near Kidzplay) to distribute the equipment (litter pickers and rubbish bags) which were very kindly donated to our Scout Group by South Ayrshire Council. The aim was to clean the grass verges and hedges along the shoreline along with the beach itself, to make it a nicer walk for the Prestwick residents, visitors and wildlife, there was a range of rubbish from bottles and cans to sweet wrappers and BBQs.

Beaver Leader Michelle Strong said ‘Great to see to so many Beavers, Cubs and parents getting involved in their community. They all did amazing. ‘

The Beavers and Cubs are working towards their Community Impact Activity Badge. The young people identified this important local event run by The Rotary Club of Prestwick to help clean up Prestwick’s’ beautiful coastline.

Thanks to everyone who turned up for Prestwick’s Beach Clean especially The Rotary Club Of Prestwick for organising this annual event and South Ayrshire Council for their support and supplying the litter pickers and plastic bags.

Beavers and Cubs Support Max’s Big Camp Out

North Devon’s ‘The Boy in the Tent’ Max Woosey who has spent more than 600 nights sleeping under canvas, for charity, celebrated his second anniversary of Max’s incredible challenge on Saturday 26th March! Last year, hundreds of children from around the world joined Max to celebrate his first anniversary of camping out by having their own campout. This year, the Scouts Association, with a little help from celebrity pal, Bear Grylls, held a second Big Camp Out!

Beavers and Cubs from the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group Prestwick showed their support to Max by finding a perfect camping spot, whether that was in their back gardens, making amazing dens out of cushions or sleeping in camper vans. Raising funds for a charity of the young peoples choice.

The Cubs built campfires to cook dinner on at Prestwick beach. There was hotdogs and buns, marshmallows and hot chocolate, to get warmed up for their sleeping adventure. Even a few Bats starting flying around the sea front to see what the excitement was! Then the Cubs went home to set up camp.

Max has inspired the Scouts Association and thousands of children to take part in Max’s Big Camp Out which raised awareness of children’s mental health, and he says: “It makes me so happy to know I’m helping other people. Being a scout has helped me with everything in life, it definitely has been something I have enjoyed. It has shown me the importance of team work and also that being kind and helping others is the way I want to live my life. My dad has always taught me KIT – Kindness, Integrity and Try hard and I feel these are in line with the philosophy of the scouts.”

Well done to Max from the Beavers and Cubs in the 14th Ayrshire Scouts Group for never giving up, you are a true inspiration!

Happy Mother’s Day to You—and to Every Mum in Your Life!

At Scouts, we know firsthand that Mums and all their awesome, life-changing love come in many different packages. Sometimes “Mum” is actually, well, Mum. But many times motherly love comes from others—like aunts, grandmas, dads, and Scout troop leaders—sometimes even from that friendly neighbor who always seems to find the best way to brighten our day.

It’s easy to see that motherhood is rooted not only in biology. Motherhood is active when we support another person’s dream, or pour our love into someone because we see it’s needed. And it’s always an amazing gift. That’s why we’re celebrating all of those who have shared motherly love with the children of this world.

So today, let’s celebrate all of the mothers out there, no matter what form they come in. Let’s take a moment to pause and say “thank you” to that beautiful person (or people!) in our lives who mothers us. Who worries about us, supports us, nurtures us—who pushes us to be our very best. Let’s acknowledge every person in our lives who helps us find our confidence, who loves us for exactly who and what we are, and who we can always count on to be in our corner, no matter what.

We’d also like to send a very special shout-out to all the Scout Mums who give so much to our Scout movement every day—from driving young people to meetings and helping with activities, to leading sections and opening young peoples’ eyes to life-changing new experiences. We appreciate you, and we know the all the young people on Kyle and Carrick District Scouts do too!

Beaver Scouts Slept Where……

On Friday 18th March, 18 excited Beavers and 5 leaders from 14th Ayrshire Scout Group Prestwick, had their first face to face camp in over 2 years in St Nicholas Church Hall, Prestwick.

A Beaver Scout sleepover is a fantastic opportunity to give young people the chance to explore new subjects, learn new skills and have a lot of fun. This sleepovers was packed full of adventure and fun, both for Beaver Scouts and Leaders.

For a lot of Beaver Scouts, a sleepover may be their first experience of
a night away from home without their parents. It may be the Beaver Scout’s first taste of overnight Scouting, so it’s so important that the young people have a good experience. It gives The young people the opportunity to achieve a “first” for themselves – once the sleepover is completed a new found sense of confidence sets in.

Their adventure started by designing and building a car out of cardboard boxes for the Drive In movie later on in the evening. Formula 1 designers take note!

Then there were some games played and then it was time to pitch tents for sleeping in. Well done Beavers it’s not the easiest think pitching a tent in a church hall.

Beds were set up, PJs on ready for the Drive In movie. But before the movie could start there was a special birthday celebration for Beaver Isaac. Happy birthday was sung and cake was eaten. Then it was pick and mix time before settling down to watch the big screen.

Beaver Isaac C said ‘I had the best birthday on Beaver Camp, I ate cake and slept in a tent with my friends.’

All 18 Beavers were tucked up in their sleeping bags by 11.00 and chatting slowly petered out and then there was silence.

By 7am all the Beaver Scouts were awake with their batteries fully charged, and it was time for breakfast. Then everyone dismantled camp, packed bags and played some games before parents arrived to collect their young ones and hear all about their first sleepover.

Fiona Beaver Scout Leader said ‘This was the first sleepover in 2 years, so it’s great to get back to what Scouts are meant to do. All the young Beavers were amazing taking the experience in their stride. It was heart warming to hear one of the young people saying, ‘That was the greatest camp ever! Roll on many more to come.’
