The Big Scout Jubilee Coffee Morning

As part of the Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) held a special Jubilee Coffee Morning, in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support. Family, friends, St Nicholas Church members and the wider Prestwick community joined in the party on Saturday 28th May 2022, at St Nicholas Church Hall.

The young people sold Home Baking, which was generously donated by our parents , tea, coffee and juice, served in Union Jack cups and plates. There was even a special performance from the Beaver Scouts!

Beaver Scout Jacob said “it was fun singing on the stage to all the people.”

But what everyone wanted to know was who had won the Great Scout Jubilee Bake off?

All our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were invited to create a Show Stopping Cake using the theme Scouting Through The Jubilee Years, Prestwick’s Mary Berry – Lara Given and Paul Hollywood – Craig Hull were the judges!

We asked the young people to be creative as they wanted whether it be badge work they had earned through the Queens reign or an important event they had been involved in or done with the Scouts. Well these young people did not disappoint! The work they put into the Show Stoppers was amazing. From bonfire cakes to sail boats to full on adventure cakes, they were truly all worthy of winning the Jubilee Apron.

The Beaver Scout Section winner was won by Isaac C campfire creation. Isaac said ‘I loved baking my cake, and my favourite part was making the campfire on top. I was so excited when I won, I couldn’t believe it!’

The Cub Section was won by Aidan. Aidan said “It was fun making the figures for my cake and I was really surprised to win a prize.”

Scout Section was won by Sebastien. Sebastien said “it was fun and I was so happy I won although they were all winners. The hall looked amazing and it was great to see how busy it was. Great atmosphere!”

Overall winner earning the Star Baker apron, went to Cub Scout Jack for his recreation of a Cub Adventure. Jack said ” I wanted to make a cake from our trip to Dalcairney falls, I loved the gorge jumping the best! The cake was a chocolate cake and I used chocolate icing and sweets to make it look like rocks. I put shimmer on the blue icing to make it look like water .”

All the entries for The Great Scout Jubilee Bake Off were amazing, making the judging that little bit harder. Watch out Britain we have got the next Star Baker in Prestwick!

“It was nice to see parents and other people’s Grans come along. He said it must be nice for them to all get a chance to chat and eat cake.” Harry Beaver Scout.

Cub Mum Lucy said”the Jubilee Coffee Morning was so lovely and great to mix with everyone again! All of the cakes entered into the bake off were very impressive. Thankyou Ayrshire Scout group for a lovely morning.”

Judith, Mum of Cub Scout Harris said “Harris absolutely loved his morning… especially winning a £10 voucher for West Coast Butchers in the raffle, which burnt a hole in his pocket. Here he is enjoying his winning chicken drumsticks.”

Debbie a Scout Mum said, “the coffee morning was fantastic! It was so lovely to see all the boys working hard to raise money and also to see people from across the community all coming together in one place again! We shared a table with a lady who was 94 and thoroughly enjoying the buzz and the lovely cake!”

A huge thank you to everyone that came and supported our special Jubilee Coffee Morning, the Group managed to raise over £600 for MacMillan Cancer Support. A special thank you to the local business that donated so generously to our raffle – Inspirations, Keen Glass, West Coast Butcher, Emporium, Wrights, Dermalounge, Black Hay, and Holly Blue. From the welcome party at the door to the washer uppers, to our talented bakers and supporters, the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group would like to thank everyone for helping us celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee year in style!

Return Of The Coffee Morning ….

18th Ayrshire have been busy recently with the return of their Annual Coffee Morning after two years off due to covid. It was held at St. Columba Church Hall in Ayr and was supported by Church members, parents, friends and other members of the community.

This year the coffee offering was taken up another level with the kind sponsorship of Rocket Monkey Roastery based locally in Ayr. There’s not much Rocket Monkey doesn’t know about coffee and our supporters loved learning about the ethical blends.

We once again had the generous support of former Cub Leader Kay taking charge of the plant stall. Parents supported the event with home baking, donations of items to sell plus hands on support on the day.

The event raised a record £1950! These funds help to support the Group but principally subsidise the Annual Group Camp at Lapwing Lodge which was held a week later.

James Edwards, 18th Ayrshire Group Scout Leader, said “we are really grateful to everyone who supported and attended our Coffee Morning, resulting in an really fantastic amount raised! Furthermore, it has meant that we have bolstered the relationships the Group has with the parents and community.”

Hamish Receives his Chief Scout Gold Award

A Scout from the 18th Ayrshire Scout Troop completed his Chief Scout Gold Award, the highest award in the Scout section. Hamish managed to complete all nine Scout Challenge Badges, tackling the final challenges during his Group Camp at Lapwing Lodge last week. Each challenge badge brings its own requirements, asking those participating to connect with their wider world; exploring different faiths; pitch a tent and practice their camping skills; work as a team to achieve a common goal and above all, learn something new!

Hamish has spends the last 4 years in the scouts section working towards getting this badge and we as leaders try our hardest to get every scout earning this award.

Hamish will now move up to Explorers in the coming months, to make more memories to last a lifetime. Well done Hamish!
