Virtual Bake Off Earns 5 Stars

The 14th Ayrshire Scout Group held the Great Virtual Scout Bake Off last week. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the full group were invited to take part in the competition and there was not a soggy bottom in sight. The bakers were asked to create a Scout Adventure bake. As there is no face to face Scouting at the moment, the young people had to make their Show Stoppers and send 1 photo to Fiona the Scout Leader by Sunday 9th August 2020. There were 4 categories, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and the Overall winner! We had 9 entries, 4 bakes from Beavers, 3 from Cubs and 2 from the Scouts! The Scout Group was very lucky having Prestwick’s own Paul Hollywood, industry expert David Murray from the Electric Bakery judging all the entries.

We saw some brilliant Scout Adventure themed show stoppers which were not only great to look at but I’ve been told they also tasted yummy !  David Murray, from the Electric Bakery said: “It was hard to judge the ‘Virtual Bake Off’ competition without getting to taste all the cakes, but I did enjoy seeing the young peoples creations!”

Fiona Hainey Scout Leader for the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick), said: “I’m very impressed by the baking skills and the effort that’s gone in to all the competition entries.”

The ‘Best Beaver Show Stopper’ Star Bake went to Sandy Maitland (8), for his amazing The Great Crate Cake Stack. The ‘Cub Star Baker’ was Morgan Ford (9) and ‘Scout Star Baker’ went to Oscar Kirkwood (12) and the final prize, ’The Great Scout Virtual Bake Off Champion’ award went to Sandy Maitland (8), for his cake decorated like a an adventure he had on a Beaver Scout Funday at Culzean Country Park, with amazing attention to detail that included crates that were stacked, a Beaver climbing, and a rope!

Sandy Maitland Beaver winner and Overall Bake Off Champion

The Great Crate Cake Stack, Beaver Winner and overall Great Scout Virtual Bake Off Champion. Sandy said ‘I loved this challenge! I decided to make a crate stack cake because it reminds me of a brilliant day I went to with the Beavers, a Funday at Culzean. I had to climb the crates to see how high I could get. The best part of the bake was making the Beaver character to go on the top (and eating the icing!)

Morgan Ford, Cub Star Baker Winner

Sleeping with the Fishes, Cub Winner by Morgan Ford. Morgan said I made this cake cause I remember how fun the Sea Life Centre Camp was. I loved the sleeping under the fishes so much so when I got home I got my own fish tank for my bedroom! I hope we get to go on a camp to the Sea Life Centre again. I’m so excited I won and I could eat it too cause its gluten free!

Neckie Cake, Scout Bake Off Winner Oscar Kirkwood. Oscar said ‘I enjoy baking and I love a competition. The cake was to represent my Scout Uniform with all the badges I have earned! I really like my winning Star Baker Wooden Spoon!

As the competition was such a hit with 14th Ayrshire Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, it was also decided that the Great Scout Bake Off would become an annual competition for the Scout Group. So, a new tradition has begun! (But hopefully the next one we will be able to taste the cakes!)

The Great Scout Bake Off Trophie

A massive thank you to David Murray from the Electric Bakery for taking the time to judge The Great Scout Virtual Bake Off!

Why We Loved Scouting During Lockdown (and You Would Have Too!)

The Strong Brothers enjoying virtual Scouting

Hi I am Kaleb Strong and I go to the 14th Ayrshire Prestwick Cubs. (9 years old)

Hi I am Izaak Strong and I go to the 14th Ayrshire Prestwick Beavers. (7 years old)

I am Jarod Strong and I will be a big boy Beaver next year. (5 years old)

Kaleb: When Cubs needed to close because of the virus I was really sad. Fiona the Beaver leader started doing badge work with her Beaver Group which Izaak (my brother) loved doing and then she started doing badges with Cubs too!

I have done lots of badges and I am still working on some more. I just do a little bit each day after we have been outside to play. My favourite badge was my DIY badge. I made a planter for my Granny and Grandad.

Fiona also does zoom call badge work, which are really fun because you get to see all your friends again. My favourite one was when we were doing our Scientist Activity badge and we made lava lamps all together. It looked so cool. I do have lots of fun doing my badges. I can’t wait to show Craig my Cub Leader all of them and I think he will be proud! (when we return to face to face scouting) Sometimes I do feel sad because I don’t get to play all the fun games we do in Cubs but I am happy I can still do Cub badges. I can`t wait to go back and see everyone again.

Izaak: Beavers is my best group! I didn’t want it to close but it needed to. I have earned 18 new badges and nearly finished my 19th badge! I really liked doing my gardening badge the most. I grew my own carrots and I helped my Daddy in his allotment.

I had fun doing the camping badges in our gardens and had to log onto a Zoom call with Fiona and the rest of my Beaver Group. We played games together then we slept in our tents all night and then another Zoom call in the morning. That was good fun.

I got to talk to my friends again. Fiona always posts my badge through the door and a letter. It says Beaver Izaak Strong so I know it is for me. My best bit is getting my new badges.

I like doing Beavers at home a bit but I miss going to Beavers and I miss Fiona she makes fun games at Beavers. I hope it starts back soon.

Jarod: I help Kaleb and Izaak do their badges. They were fun. Fiona told my Mummy I can join in as I am nearly a Beaver. I think I am the best at badges in my house! My best best badge is my big camping badge.

Happy Strong Brothers receiving their badges

With over 30 badges earned between the Strong Brothers, as a Scout leader I couldn’t have asked for more dedicated young people in our Scout Group! My hope for continuing scouting (all be it virtual scouting, during lockdown and beyond) was to engage the young Scouts with fun activities while learning new skills. Skills that the whole family could get involved in. Well done Kaleb, Izaak and Jarod for all your hard work and thank you for keeping me fit delivering all those badges by foot! (Ha ha) Keep on Scouting I am very proud of you all! (Fiona Hainey Scout Leader 14th Ayrshire Scout Group- Prestwick)
