A Christmas Hero

Eight-year-old Beaver Scout Dayn, who has complex heart defects, challenged himself to collect 150 selection boxes and Christmas goodies to make this year extra special for children that are in hospital over Christmas.

Dayn started his appeal by asking the young people of the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) which include Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, to donate a selection box or Christmas goodies. The support Dayn received was amazing from not only his fellow Scout members giving to his appeal. Very quickly he had smashed his target with the 18th Ayrshire Scout Group donating as well as Kingcase Primary School (where Dayn attends school), Morrisons Ayr and the wider Prestwick Community adding to his total.

University Hospital Crosshouse said ‘A huge thank you to everyone who supported Dayn’s Christmas charity appeal. At the last count a massive 215 Selection boxes were donated and over 70 essential toiletries
This is a simple albeit humble act of kindness that will definitely put a huge smile on each child’s face who has been admitted and will be admitted over the Christmas period.
Also supporting parents and guardians who didn’t have time to pack any personal care items prior to their child’s admission ❤️.’

Dayn said ‘I really enjoyed collecting for the other children at the hospital and loved sharing all the selection boxes and Christmas goodies out.

14th Ayrshire Scout leader Fiona Hainey said: “When Dayn asked our Beaver Group to help with his appeal our full Scout Group never hesitates. “Dayn has always shown a commitment to helping others who are less fortunate them himself.

“Dayn is a gift to those he’s around. His positive attitude and charitable nature is humbling. Young people like Dayn represent the best values and traditions of Scouting. “I could not be prouder of him,‘

Beaver Scouts at Work

Congratulations to five 14th Ayrshire (Prestwick) Beaver Scouts – Dayn, Logan, Caleb, Harry and Otis – who were presented with their Chief Scout’s Bronze Award by the Group Scout Leader / Beaver Scout Leader Fiona. This is the top award for Beavers.  It shows that they are adventurous, have helped the local community, learnt about the world around them and explored the great outdoors.  It also means that they have gained skills, worked in a team, made friends and completed all six Challenge Awards and four Activity or Staged badges (all though these young people have collected many more activity badges then 4).

We wish Dayn and Otis all the best as they continue their scouting journeys in Cubs after Christmas, while Logan, Caleb and Harry still have more time to earn extra Beaver Activity badges before they go up to Cubs.

The Chief Scout Bronze Award is the highest award you can receive as a Beaver Scout. Its been a joy to watch these five young people through their Beaver Scout journey. They have done things that were completely out of their comfort zone but threw themselves into the challenges and came out triumphant.

Fiona said ‘Congratulations again on this very important Scout Award it really is a big deal in the Scouting Community. I am a very proud Scout Leader to present these Chief Scout Bronze Awards to you all. I will miss Dayn and Otis when they move up to Cubs after Christmas but I know that all the skills that they have learnt in Beavers will only get better when they move up to more challenging things in Cubs.
