The Beaver Moon

On Friday 23rd November the 14th Ayrshire Beaver Group went to the Scottish Dark Sky’s At Night Observatory in Dalmellington. After careful research into astronomy before the trip the Beaver’s found out that the Full Moon in November is called The Beaver Moon, named after beavers who build their winter dams at this time of year. Which just added to the boys excitement.

David the astronomer at the observatory taught all the boys about the stars, plants, satellites and much much more. He was fantastic.

Between using all the telescopes and learning about the solar system in the Planetarium the beavers had a fantastic trip and all earned their astronomy activity badge.

Ballantrae 2nd Ayrshire remembrance

We have been busy over the last month learning about world war 1 , we created a memorial box that was displayed over this weekend showing the role scouts played during WW1 and also honouring just 4 of the approximately 8000 scouting members that did not return home from the war. We also painted a memorial stone for each of the fallen soldiers of our village there were 47 in our wee village which we placed at the memorial. Today we joined members of our village for the remembrance service we led the parade and did readings and some of our scouts piped after the silence

Lest we forget

14th Ayrshire Scouts Group Remembrance Parade at St Nicholas Church

Today the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group paraded into St Nicholas Church Prestwick for the Act of Remembrance.

The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts learnt all about Remembrance Day this week.

I asked a Beaver, Cub and Scout what they know about Remembrance Day;

Harrison from Beavers said “It’s all about people who died in the war.”

Finlay from Cubs said “we wear poppies because they grew in the battle fields from World War 1”

Ben from Scouts said “Remembrance is one of the ways we can look back and honour the people who sacrificed their lives for their country’s”

After the church service 1 Beaver, Cub and Scout lay the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group wreath at the war memorial at Prestwick Cross, during the town service.

14th Ayrshire Scouts Learning to Ski at Newmilns

Every Saturday for the next 6 weeks the 14th Ayrshire Scouts Group and family are learning or brushing up on their ski techniques at Newmilns snowsports centre. Great to see so many enjoying learning a new skill.

Today we saw the beginners participate in slow races, with the slowest most controlled person winning. Well done Oscar.

Over on the big slope Ben and Luke were mastering the jump and box.

Although it was a rather wet day the group seemed to miss the rain which is always a bonus.

Kip on the Ship

The 14th Ayrshire Beavers, Cubs and the 12th Ayrshire Beavers are on a night away to the tall ship in Glasgow. 40 boys will board the ship, some of which is their first nights Away.

We are doing fun ship activities all around the tall ship, ocean inspired games, pizza delivery for supper and finishing off with a water inspired film.

Then off for a kip in our sleeping bags. Then it’s all hands on deck to scrub the decks to earn our breakfast in the morning. Once packed up we will walk the plank and load up the bus to return to the waiting parents in Prestwick.
