Beavers In The Kitchen

With the second round of Lockdown happening in Scotland it’s the perfect time to engage the 14th Ayrshire Beavers Scouts (Prestwick) in all things Burns.

The young people started their virtual evening baking shortbread over zoom. Following Fiona, the Beaver Scout Leaders step by step instructions. The boys measured, mixed, rolled and cut the shortbread into biscuits, ready for the oven. Definitely showing their creative sides.

As the 14th Ayrshire Beaver Scouts never stand still, while their shortbread was baking it was time to learn all about Robert Burns.

A quick history lesson about the life of Robert Burns was shared and then the young people were asked if they wanted to recite a Scottish Poem or any interesting facts about Robert Burns.

The Beavers never disappoint with a Izaak reciting the first Scots poem brilliantly. Oscar told us all how old Burns poems were. Otis explaining what goes into a Haggis and Archie and Harry reciting some brilliant Burns poems. All that was missing was our annual Burns Supper accompanied by iron bru. But we did all have homemade shortbread so that’s something.

For some Beavers (and parents) this was their first time making home made shortbread and I’m sure it will not be their last. From shortbread in the shape of planes to the USA state of Texas I think it’s fair to say the boys enjoyed their virtual baking experience.

Holly, Beaver Scout Campbells Mum said ‘that’s our first time making shortbread and Campbell loved learning about Robert Burns! We made our shortbread in the shape of Texas…best of both of our worlds!’

Beaver Scout Max said ‘I loved making the shortbread. It looks so cool and tastes amazing! I enjoyed the video about Robert Burns too! ‘

At present the Beavers are working towards their Thistle Award. Which is a badge that focuses on Scotland, it’s people, and culture — whilst being fun and challenging for young people.

Just because we are in lockdown doesn’t mean we can’t still learn new skills and have fun!
