The Big Scout Jubilee Coffee Morning

As part of the Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) held a special Jubilee Coffee Morning, in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support. Family, friends, St Nicholas Church members and the wider Prestwick community joined in the party on Saturday 28th May 2022, at St Nicholas Church Hall.

The young people sold Home Baking, which was generously donated by our parents , tea, coffee and juice, served in Union Jack cups and plates. There was even a special performance from the Beaver Scouts!

Beaver Scout Jacob said “it was fun singing on the stage to all the people.”

But what everyone wanted to know was who had won the Great Scout Jubilee Bake off?

All our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were invited to create a Show Stopping Cake using the theme Scouting Through The Jubilee Years, Prestwick’s Mary Berry – Lara Given and Paul Hollywood – Craig Hull were the judges!

We asked the young people to be creative as they wanted whether it be badge work they had earned through the Queens reign or an important event they had been involved in or done with the Scouts. Well these young people did not disappoint! The work they put into the Show Stoppers was amazing. From bonfire cakes to sail boats to full on adventure cakes, they were truly all worthy of winning the Jubilee Apron.

The Beaver Scout Section winner was won by Isaac C campfire creation. Isaac said ‘I loved baking my cake, and my favourite part was making the campfire on top. I was so excited when I won, I couldn’t believe it!’

The Cub Section was won by Aidan. Aidan said “It was fun making the figures for my cake and I was really surprised to win a prize.”

Scout Section was won by Sebastien. Sebastien said “it was fun and I was so happy I won although they were all winners. The hall looked amazing and it was great to see how busy it was. Great atmosphere!”

Overall winner earning the Star Baker apron, went to Cub Scout Jack for his recreation of a Cub Adventure. Jack said ” I wanted to make a cake from our trip to Dalcairney falls, I loved the gorge jumping the best! The cake was a chocolate cake and I used chocolate icing and sweets to make it look like rocks. I put shimmer on the blue icing to make it look like water .”

All the entries for The Great Scout Jubilee Bake Off were amazing, making the judging that little bit harder. Watch out Britain we have got the next Star Baker in Prestwick!

“It was nice to see parents and other people’s Grans come along. He said it must be nice for them to all get a chance to chat and eat cake.” Harry Beaver Scout.

Cub Mum Lucy said”the Jubilee Coffee Morning was so lovely and great to mix with everyone again! All of the cakes entered into the bake off were very impressive. Thankyou Ayrshire Scout group for a lovely morning.”

Judith, Mum of Cub Scout Harris said “Harris absolutely loved his morning… especially winning a £10 voucher for West Coast Butchers in the raffle, which burnt a hole in his pocket. Here he is enjoying his winning chicken drumsticks.”

Debbie a Scout Mum said, “the coffee morning was fantastic! It was so lovely to see all the boys working hard to raise money and also to see people from across the community all coming together in one place again! We shared a table with a lady who was 94 and thoroughly enjoying the buzz and the lovely cake!”

A huge thank you to everyone that came and supported our special Jubilee Coffee Morning, the Group managed to raise over £600 for MacMillan Cancer Support. A special thank you to the local business that donated so generously to our raffle – Inspirations, Keen Glass, West Coast Butcher, Emporium, Wrights, Dermalounge, Black Hay, and Holly Blue. From the welcome party at the door to the washer uppers, to our talented bakers and supporters, the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group would like to thank everyone for helping us celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee year in style!

“Eggs”tra Special Cub Scout

Cub Scout Dayn from the 14th Ayrshire Scout group was on a mission to collect as many Easter Eggs and toiletries for children in hospital over Easter. Young people who will benefit from Dayn’s Easter kindness, are the patients at the Royal Hospital for Children Glasgow, Crosshouse Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and the Yorkhill Charity. After a heart felt appeal from Dayn, who has complex heart defects and attends the Royal Hospital for Children regularly for check ups and open heart operations, the Kyle and Carrick District Scout members jumped into action.

BEAVERS, Cubs and Scouts from the 18th Ayrshire Scout Group (St Columba), 28th Ayrshire Scouts (Troon) 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) and Morrison’s Ayr, shelled out for chocolate treats, to give Easter Bunny Cub Scout Dayn, from Prestwick, a hand to make this year’s Easter appeal a success.

Dayn said “A massive thank you to everyone that gave so generously to my’ Easter Appeal, I am overwhelmed with everyone’s generosity. I know these Easter treats will bring a smile to a persons face that’s in hospital or having treatment over Easter. Thank you so much!”

Dayn delivered over 302 Easter treats, toiletries and toys to the sick children and their parents over the Easter period, hopefully bringing a smile to their faces.

Hillbillies MCC Easter Egg Run Crosshouse Hospital

Dayn was lucky enough to join the Hillbillies MCC Easter Egg Run to Crosshouse University Hospital. These amazing guys raised over £3,000 for the hospital along with Dayns 150 Easter treats to the children in Crosshouse Hospital during the Easter.

Fiona Hainey Group Scout Leader for the 14th Ayrshire Scouts Group said ‘Dayn is a gift to those he’s around. His positive attitude and charitable nature is humbling. Dayn has tirelessly collected seasonal treats for the children in the hospitals of Ayrshire and Glasgow for years now and the Scout Groups from the Kyle and Carrick District are delighted to be part of his Easter and Christmas appeals every year. Dayn you are awesome!’

What Would A Camp Be Without a Fire…

Normality resumed for the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) when 17 Scouts, 4 Leaders, 2 young leaders and a parent helper enjoyed an overnight camp at the Nether Auchendrane Girlguiding Activity Centre, on 26th March.

Camping is fun and it’s good for young peoples mind, body, and spirit. It helps them learn to rely on themselves – on their own skills and knowledge. When young people go camping as a Scout, they will develop skills that they will take throughout their life. The 14th Ayrshire Scouts really enjoyed setting up camp and getting out and about in the great outdoors once again.

Scout Harrison

I had a great time!

Scout Finlay R

I had a ball on my first Scout Camp!

14th Ayrshire Scout Leader Joanne King said ‘The sun was shining, the stage was set for a perfect first camp for 14th Ayrshire Scouts! Scouts and leaders enjoyed a weekend at Nether Auchendrane Activity Centre, Alloway. They built their tents that would be their home for the night, played rounders, football, completed a hike, tried pioneering, had a camp fire, sang campfire songs (some excellent singing can I say!) and played campfire games and told jokes around the flames. Hot chocolate drank , s’mores made and eaten – everything that is required for a perfect camp!

Lots of fun and laughs were had on a beautiful starry sky, we even got to see the International Space Station fly by, all before Jack Frost paid us a visit! The chilly March night was worth it for the beautiful sun rise on Sunday morning, with some Sun Salutations thrown in.

Everyone went home tired and unwashed – but very happy! A few wet odd socks and camping utensils left behind, but that wouldn’t be a camp without that.

I was so proud of all our Scouts, they worked together, played together and shared stories together, that’s what a Scout Camp is all about. Life skills – tick!
Happy Leaders – tick! ⚜️
Bring on the next one!🏕

Spreading a Little Kindness Through Art

A painted rock, is sometimes called a kindness stone, its simply a rock that someone has taken and decorated.

I am sure everyone in Prestwick has stumbled upon a colourful, hand-painted stone, decorated by the fantastic Chris Rutter, one of Prestwick’s true gems! Chris has sprinkled positivity around Prestwick with her hand painted stones for young people and adults alike to find and enjoy for the last few years. These stones have sparked joy, friendly competition and brighten up peoples entire days.

The 14th Ayrshire Beaver Scouts (Prestwick) were lucky enough to have Chris come and do a master class with them. The young Beavers had to go and scavenge Prestwick Beach for the right size of flat stones or slates ready to listen to Chris about how best to decorate their stones for the Easter stone hunt.

As you can see from the photos it may have got a bit messy, but that’s just being a Beaver Scout. All the Beavers and leaders loved hearing how Chris got into painting stones and spreading her kindness into the Prestwick community.

Chris Rutter said ‘what a great night I had painting stones with the Beavers, they did so well.’

Jacob Beaver Scout said ‘it was really fun painting the stones with the marker pens.’

Beaver Leader Lara said ‘Such a fabulous night with Chris decorating stones to put around Prestwick. All stones are Easter inspired 🐣 Lovely to see the beavers show off their impressive art skills!’

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the 14th Ayrshire Group (Prestwick) have always supported Chris with the hiding of her fabulous painted stones. So it will be even more special when the Beavers hide their own Easter Masterpieces for the Prestwick Community to find. Keep an eye out for them during the Easter weekend!

A massive thank you to Chris for giving up her time to engage with the 14th Ayrshire Beaver Scout Group. The young people have definitely learnt how an act of kindness can change someone’s day for the better. What an unsung hero Chris Rutter is for Prestwick!

Beaver Scouts at Work

Congratulations to five 14th Ayrshire (Prestwick) Beaver Scouts – Dayn, Logan, Caleb, Harry and Otis – who were presented with their Chief Scout’s Bronze Award by the Group Scout Leader / Beaver Scout Leader Fiona. This is the top award for Beavers.  It shows that they are adventurous, have helped the local community, learnt about the world around them and explored the great outdoors.  It also means that they have gained skills, worked in a team, made friends and completed all six Challenge Awards and four Activity or Staged badges (all though these young people have collected many more activity badges then 4).

We wish Dayn and Otis all the best as they continue their scouting journeys in Cubs after Christmas, while Logan, Caleb and Harry still have more time to earn extra Beaver Activity badges before they go up to Cubs.

The Chief Scout Bronze Award is the highest award you can receive as a Beaver Scout. Its been a joy to watch these five young people through their Beaver Scout journey. They have done things that were completely out of their comfort zone but threw themselves into the challenges and came out triumphant.

Fiona said ‘Congratulations again on this very important Scout Award it really is a big deal in the Scouting Community. I am a very proud Scout Leader to present these Chief Scout Bronze Awards to you all. I will miss Dayn and Otis when they move up to Cubs after Christmas but I know that all the skills that they have learnt in Beavers will only get better when they move up to more challenging things in Cubs.

Inspiration in a box

Warhammer has partnered with the Scouts in the UK, proudly sponsoring the Model Maker Activity Badge. By sponsoring this Badge they have very created Games Workshop to provide young people with new and creative ways to learn skills for life.

In November 2021 the 14th Ayrshire Scouts (Prestwick) attending the fantastic Games Workshops in the Warhammer shop in Ayr. All the young people left feeling inspired. They were immersed in new, fantastical worlds which stoked their imaginations.

Warhammer is the world’s greatest miniatures game. It is also an immensely creative hobby that help a young person’s inner artist flourish, whilst also encouraging social activities and group interaction – something Scouts from the 14th Ayrshire really enjoyed. They also left with a fantastic goodie bag to continue with the model making.

Scout Eric said ‘I had a great time. When I got home from the workshop I got straight into building my second model. Thanks’

All the models the young people built were made from recyclable plastic, which was another topic they covered in the workshop. They found out they they could play different games with the figures. A war game … or a game with dice, almost like chess. Playing theses games can help to learn about strategies, decision making and numeracy.

Scout Leader Joanne King from the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group said ‘seeing how the young people worked together, helping each other (once again) was great. They all seemed interested in what they were doing, and seeing all the finished figures around the shop inspired them! Huge thank you to Austen at Warhammer, Ayr. Great workshop.’

Scout Finlay wasted no time spending his birthday money on his new hobby.

The 14th Ayrshire Scout Group would like to thank Austen and his team at Warhammer, Ayr for all the time and work they put into making these workshops a roaring success. The Scouts had the best time EVER!

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Crew visit Prestwick Beavers

On Friday 3rd September, 14th Ayrshire Beavers Scout colony had a fantastic treat when they were visited by crews from Ayr Fire Station at Prestwick Beach. They learned about fire safety and the role of firefighters in our community. It was an exciting evening exploring the fire engine and the Beavers thoroughly enjoyed asking the firefighters many, many many questions. They learnt that firefighters rarely rescue cats from trees, they occasionally have to rescue horses from holes and the Fire crew have over 1 mile of hose to help put out fires in every location! The Beavers were given the opportunity to see through the heat goggles the fire fighters use in a real fire and lift the jaws of life, not as easy as it looked!

Tony Reid who is the Watch Commander said “It was great to meet up with group, and the crews were kept on their toes with all the questions.”

Firefighters play a key role in delivering Community Safety messages to different groups in the communities we serve, and the crews enjoy these events as much as the young people”.

The visit was enjoyed by all and we thank the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Red Watch crew from Ayr Fire Station for their time and energy in showing us around their pristine fire engine.

Badges Galore!

Written byBeaver Scout Izaak Strong, 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) 8 years old.

When it was lockdown I really missed Beavers but Fiona our Beaver Scout Leader said if we wanted to we could do extra badge work at home on top of our weekly session in person or on zoom. I asked my Mum and she said that would be a good idea as it would keep me busy and this was the start of my mission!

Fiona set a new badge every week during Lockdown and I would split the badge work up and just did a bit every day, so I still had lots of time to play with my brothers. Sometimes the badge work was so much fun I would do it all in the same day. After I had completed the badge work I emailed it to Fiona and she would check it and then I would get the badge posted through my door! I really liked that part because she always wrote a wee note on the back on how much she liked it.

In the summer holidays Fiona sent my Mum a message saying because I had done so many activity badges during Lockdown, I only had 6 left to do before I completed them all! I knew this was my mission and I wanted to get them all before I moved up to Cubs.

My favourite badge was my gardening badge. My Dad has an allotment and I helped him do all the weeding and the planting. We grew potatoes, carrots, strawberries and raspberries. When my Dad was at work my Mum took me up to the allotment so I could keep an eye on everything and keep it all watered. This badge took a couple of months to do but I loved doing it and I still go up to the allotment with my Dad.

My hardest badge was my faith activity badge. This badge took me a couple of weeks to do because I didn’t really know much about other religions. I found some videos on YouTube though that talked all about different religions and I watched them which helped me do my badge work. I am glad I did this badge because if I ever meet people that have a different religion I will be able to talk to them about it.

The badge where I learnt the most was my sailing badge. I had never been sailing before so I was a bit nervous but the instructors at Prestwick Sailing club explained everything to us. When we were out on the water it was so much fun, and I quickly learnt how to steer the boat. I think the most important things I learnt were to never sail out too far and if you fall in do not panic.

I am so happy that I managed my mission to get all 33 activity badges and I am going to miss Fiona and Adam lots but I know I will have lots of fun at Cubs too. “

“Beavers is the best group ever as it is just so much fun and I learn so many new things.” (Izaak Strong)

Izaak’s Mum Michelle said “I am bursting with pride for Izaak. He set himself a goal and he never gave up. “Izaaks leaders have given him so much support and guidance. They are fantastic role models.”

It took me two years to get all 33 Beavers activity badges, plus my Chief Scout Bronze Award.

Fiona and Adam, Beaver Scout Leaders for the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) said: “Well done Izaak – it’s a real achievement to develop all the skills required to achieve all the Beaver Scout Badges. Achieving them is no mean feat. Izaak has shown grit determination and resilience.”

“He joins an exclusive and very small group of other Beaver Scouts around the world who have gained all their badges and in doing so have developed the skills they will need to make their way in life.”We are very proud of Izaak and of the volunteer Leaders from 14th Ayrshire Scout Group that have supported him on his Scouting journey. Well done. Now-let’s see what he does in Cub! Watch this space. “

My Time On The Water

Written by Cub Scout KEITH WRIGHT from 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick)

Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and canoeing

Stand Up Paddle-boarding
Recently I’ve been spending more time in the sea because I got a wetsuit. It is really fun! First I tried Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP). Before we went on the sea, we watched the safety video, I learned that I need to wear a life jacket, stay in your depth in the water, and strap the board to your ankle so it doesn’t float away. I also always went with an adult who helped steer/row. We also needed to check the tides and the wind – if the wind in blowing off shore (out towards the sea) this can be dangerous because you can get blown away from the beach. We used thebeachguide.co.uk to check these things before we went.

I enjoyed practicing on my body board (this helped me get used to splashes of water in my face), and also had fun kneeling on the SUP while my dad paddled. I did try standing up but the sea was wavy and so I fell off!

Canoeing
During our recent holiday to Newtonmore, we went to Loch Insh and did canoeing. I still wore a life jacket because the Loch was deep, but we didn’t need to worry about the tides because it was a Loch. For safety you shouldn’t stand up in a canoe except when you are getting in and out, because you could fall in! I went in a two man canoe with my dad. I sat in the front and helped with paddling. It was tricky learning to steer, because paddling on the left side made you go to the right.

Scout Leader Fiona for the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group said ‘ Wow what an achievement for Keith being so active on the water. This time last year Keith was really scared of the water let along trying and mastering SUP and canoeing. Great to see the enjoyment and confidence he has found doing these water sports. Keith has earned stage 2 Paddle Sports activity badge and stage 2 Time on the Water for his knowledge, skill and safety on the water. Well done Keith can’t wait to see what you do for stage 3!

Scouts Ahoy

If you think scouting is just about knots and sleeping on the floor in a field then prepare to be surprised. You will more likely hear the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) talk about rock climbing, making fires(to cook on!), playing wide – games and generally loving the outdoors rather than knots, shorts or long socks.
While yes of course knots do come into it(you won‘t believe how useful they can be) but scouting has come a long way since the first group started. For one thing, you can get a nice comfy air mattress for that field you didn’t want to sleep on. If you are looking for something so engaging and enjoyable that you don‘t even think about getting your phone out for 1-2 hours a week then you really should join scouting in the Kyle and Carrick Scout District and be part of a scouting family of over 450,000 people countrywide.

14th Ayrshire Beaver Scouts

On Friday 28th May 2021, the 14th Ayrshire Beavers, Cubs and Scouts turned into young sailors for the night, at Prestwick Sailing Club. The fantastic sailing instructors at the Club inspired the young Scouts to a life on the water.

There might be nothing in the world that packs as many life lessons as the activity of sailing. It teaches teamwork, engineering, history, patience, oceanography, ecology…all in one fell swoop. Because of this, the Leaders of the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) felt it was really important for their young people to learn how to sail ,especially as we live by the sea.

Scouts of all ages thrive on learning new skills, especially after such a tough year due to the pandemic. This day and age it’s extremely important to create balance between the natural world and the digital world.

There is simply nothing like being able to steer your own boat at the age of 6 years old. Riding a bike is one thing. Skillfully steering a sailing dinghy is quite another. The young Scouts were given the opportunity to helm a dinghy, which made them feel as if they can accomplish anything they put their mind too. This confidence is hugely beneficial in a young persons education and social life.

The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts learnt how to avoid collisions as well as how to navigate through tight spaces and corners. Developing confidence in spatial awareness involving coordination and critical thinking. When out sailing, these young Scouts learnt how to navigate the waters by distinguishing landmarks and determining directions. By mastering this skill, they begin to understand how to get from A to B, and as a result are better able to assess their surroundings.

Knowing what direction the wind is coming from, how strong it is, and when it is inappropriate to take to the water, are all things the Scouts learnt. A crucial part of learning to sail is ensuring proper preparation before departing from the shore. They learnt to rig a dinghy and then de-rig and tidy up at the end of the session. This is drilled into all dinghy sailors. They learnt that precision and teamwork is imperative to success, “a tidy boat is safe afloat” may be a skill they can apply to their bedroom – we can live in hope!

Before the young people could go out onto the sea, they were walked through the Five Essentials of sailing- Then a quick run down of the boating terms for parts of the boat they were sent out into Prestwick Bay. Each young person earned their Scout Sailing Staged 1 Activity Badge, for completing this amazing session on the water, thanks to all the instructors that guided the 14TH Ayrshire Scout Group. All the young people were treated to a hot chocolate and biscuit on their return to dry land, which did the trick of warming them up again!

New Beaver Finley had his first Scouting adventure at the the sailing club and told is ‘I absolutely loved it. Can I go sailing again tomorrow?’

Cub Scout Sandy said ‘I had the best time!.. it was exciting and fun. The instructors were lovely, really kind and helpful’

Scout Ben said ‘it was my first time sailing, and I would never have thought I would be in a 2 man boat sailing myself. Best fun ever!’

Fiona Hainey, Scout Leader at the 14th Ayrshire Scout Group (Prestwick) said ‘ My heart is still smiling with all the new experiences our Scout Group got to try today, thank you Prestwick Sailing Club, for your patience and knowledge. I know all our young people will never look at Prestwick Bay in the same way again. Life long memories and friendships were made out on the sea today. As a Scout Leader we offer young people opportunities they may not get elsewhere. Seeing the Scouts in your Group grown and develop as young people, and knowing you have played a part in that, is a great feeling.’

“At Prestwick Sailing Club we are always keen to engage with local groups in offering the opportunity to experience the thrill of sailing and it has been great to see the young people of 14th Ayrshire Scout Group taking to the water in May this year” ~ Cameron McIntyre, Chief Instructor, PSC.
